These azaleas were collected from all over Japan during the Meiji period, when the hotel was the villa of Baron Iwasaki of the Mitsubishi Zaibatsu, to delight the eyes of dignitaries from Japan and abroad,
84種約3000株が「男爵のつつじ」と呼ばれて親しまれています。
about 3,000 azaleas of 84 varieties are known as "Baron's Azaleas".
富士山に向かって駆け上がるように植えられたつつじは樹齢100年を超えるものもあり、大半が大人の背丈を超えるほどの大きさで、庭園はさながらつつじの回廊となっています。　
Some of the rhododendron trees planted along the road leading up to Mount Fuji are more than 100 years old, most of them are taller than adults, and the garden resembles an azalea corridor.
今年はどの花も早い開花を迎えていますが、男爵のつつじも例年に比べると1週間から10日ほど早く咲き始め、今は5分咲きとなっています。　
All of this year's flowers bloomed early, but Baron azaleas started blooming about a week to 10 days earlier than usual and they've been in bloom for 5 minutes now.
この時期は赤やピンクの花が中心ですが、紫や白の花も咲き始め、庭園はますます艶やかさを増していきます。
