My First Proper Tea Ceremony

私は今日お母さんと一緒にお茶を体験します。
Today, I'll be experiencing tea together with my mother.
今日のお茶会は茶事と言って、
The tea ceremony today is called the tea gathering,
お茶の中の大切なところが全て入っている正式なものだそうです。
I am told that it's a formal matter that contains every important aspect of tea.
お茶はお薬と同じように、一服と数えるのだと分かりました。
I found out that, like medicine, tea is counted by "doses".
やっぱり少し苦いのは体にいいのかな。
I guess it's a little bitter (because) it's good for the body?
お母さんに聞いたら、「心にもいいのよ」って言ってました。
When I asked my mother, she said, "It's good for the heart too!"
私達のためだけのおもてなしって、どんなだろう？
Hospitality just for us - I wonder what kind (of hospitality) it is?
一期一会って、お母さんが言ってた。
Mother was saying it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
今日一日の出会いを大切にする、一日だけの劇場。
To cherish the encounters of the whole day today - a one-day-only theater.
ここが茶室への入り口、にじり口。
This is the entrance to the tearoom - the crawl-through entrance.
小さいから、中に入るにはどんな人も、頭を低くして入らないといけない。
Because it's tiny, in order to get inside, everyone has to lower their heads, no matter who they are.
みんな平等なんだ。
Everybody's equal.
炭を入れてくれる。
Charcoal is put in for us.
温かい空気に包まれる。
Being surrounded by a warm atmosphere.
これも大切なおもてなしの一つ。
This is also an important part of hospitality.
お香を入れる。
Incense is lit.
見えないけれど感じる、香りのおもてなし。
Aromatic hospitality that cannot be seen but sensed.
お茶事では、お茶を飲む前に食事をします。
In a tea gathering, food is eaten before the tea is drunk.
食事が終わるとお菓子が出てくる。
When the eating is done, desserts are served.
食べるのがもったいないくらいきれい。
It's almost too wasteful to eat something so pretty.
お菓子の後は、少し休憩。
After the snacks is a little bit of intermission.
お茶室の中では、次の場面への準備中。
In the tearoom, preparations for the next scene is in progress.
母さんが教えてくれた、「花は野にあるように」って。
Mother taught me that, "The flower is as if in the wild."
お道具を清める仕草。
The motion of purifying the equipment.
みんなの心まできれいになっていく。
Even everyone's heart is becoming clean.
お茶碗を回すのは、お茶碗の正面に口を付けないという謙虚な気持ちからだって。
Rotating the tea bowl is said to be from feelings of modesty to not put one's mouth on the front of the tea bowl!
今日一日だけのお茶事、そして心からのおもてなし、ありがとうございました。
