太平洋地域で通信事業を展開する「デジセル」は22日、トンガ本島などでインターネット通信のサービスが完全復旧したと発表しました。

トンガでは先月15日に起きた大規模な火山噴火とその後の津波により、国内や海外をつなぐ海底ケーブルが損傷し、インターネットや電話がつながらなくなっていました。

噴火の数日後には衛星回線を利用した国際電話などが一部復旧していましたが、22日までに国際通信を担う海底ケーブルの修復作業も完了し、安定したインターネット接続ができるようになりました。

ただ、トンガ国内の島々を結ぶケーブルは今も修復が進んでおらず、離島地域での通信の完全復旧には時間がかかるとみられています。
