泉いずみ長者ちょうじゃ

昔むかし々、山口やまぐち県けん佐波さば郡ぐんに太郎たろうと花はなという貧まずしいが信心しんじん深ふかい夫婦ふうふが住すんでおった

Once upon a time, a poor but religious couple named Taro and Hana lived in Saba County, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

ある陽気ようきの良よい日ひ、太郎たろうは野良のら仕事しごとの合間あいまに眠ねむってしもうた

One cheerful day, Taro fell asleep between stray work.

そうして不思議ふしぎな夢ゆめを見みた

And so I had a strange dream

夢ゆめの中なかでどこからか漂ただよってくる良よい匂においに誘さそわれて、太郎たろうが歩あるいて行いくと、小ちいさな洞穴ほらあながあってその奥おくに泉いずみが湧わいておった

Invited by the pleasant smell that wafted out from somewhere in the dream, Taro walked over to see a small cave and a spring was gushing deep inside.

太郎たろうが泉いずみの水みずを飲のんでみると、それは大層たいそう旨うまい酒さけじゃったそうな

When Taro drank the water from the spring, it seemed to be a very delicious sake.

しばらくして太郎たろうが目めを覚さますと、太郎たろうの顔かおは赤あからみ息いきは酒さけ臭くさくなっておった

After a while, Taro woke up and his face was red and his breath smelled like a liquor.

そこで太郎たろうが夢ゆめのとおりに歩あるいていくと、洞穴ほらあながあって、夢ゆめのとおりに酒さけの泉いずみが湧わいておった

As Taro walked along the way he had dreamed, there was a cave, and a fountain of sake gushing up just like he had dreamed

これは如来にょらい様さまからのお告つげじゃと、夫婦ふうふは喜よろこんで泉いずみの酒さけで小ちいさな酒屋さかやをひらいた

This was a message from Buddha, and the couple happily opened a small liquor store with sake from the spring.

すると、その酒さけの美味おいしさは評判ひょうばんになり、たちまち中国ちゅうごく地方ちほう一いちの酒屋さかやになったそうな

The deliciousness of the sake became popular and quickly became the largest liquor store in the Chugoku region.

それで、太郎たろうは名前なまえを左衛門さえもん太郎たろう（さえもんたろう）と改あらため、何なに不自由ふじゆうない暮くらしを送おくるようになった

So Taro changed his name to Saemontaro and began living a life without any problems.

そうして次つぎに夫婦ふうふは、如歳様さまに子宝こだからに恵めぐまれるよう祈いのったそうじゃ

Then, the couple prayed that they would be blessed with children as they were.

すると、やがて玉たまのような女おんなの子こが生うまれた

And then a girl like a ball was born.

夫婦ふうふは如来にょらい様さまのお堂どうがユリの名所めいしょだったので、女おんなの子こに「ゆり」と名付なづけ大切たいせつに育そだてた

The couple named the Buddha's temple, Yuri, and raised her carefully, as the Buddha's temple was a famous spot for lilies.

ゆりは名前なまえのとおりに、白しろ百ひゃく合ごうのように美うつくしく豊ゆたかな娘むすめに育そだっていった

As the name suggests, Yuri grew up to be a beautiful and rich girl like white lilies.

ところが、やがて太郎たろうは自分じぶん達たちに「位い」が欠かけていることに気きが付ついた

However, eventually Taro realized that he lacked a "position."

そこで太郎たろうは、都との大臣だいじんに使者ししゃを送おくり、夫婦ふうふの一番いちばんの宝たからである娘むすめと引ひき換かえに、長者ちょうじゃの号ごうを得えることにした

So Taro sent an envoy to the Minister of the city and decided to obtain the title of the lord in exchange for his daughter, the most precious daughter of the couple.

こうして夫婦ふうふは娘むすめを大臣だいじんに差さし出だし、長者ちょうじゃになって、欲ほしいものを全すべて手てに入いれたという

Thus the couple handed out their daughter to the minister, became a wealthy man, and obtained everything they wanted.

じゃが、長ながい年月としつきが経たつうちに夫婦ふうふは娘むすめがいない寂さびしさに耐たえかね、重おもい病やまいにかかって相次あいついでこの世よを去さっていった

However, over the years, the couple couldn't stand the loneliness they had without their daughter, and they suffered a serious illness and passed away one after another.
