昔むかしある所ところに、正直しょうじき者しゃの爺じいさまと婆ばばさまがいました

There was a place where there was an honest old man and an old lady.

ある日ひ、爺じいさまが自分じぶんたちの後生ごしょうを願ねがう（極楽ごくらく行いきを願ねがう）ため、町まちまで後生ごしょうを買かいに出でかけました

One day, the old man went to town to buy the afterlife to pray for their afterlife (hoping for the paradise).

爺じいさまが、町まちで「後生ごしょうはありませんか？」とたずね歩あるくものだから、面白おもしろがった人形にんぎょう屋やが声こえをかけてきました

An interesting doll shop called out to me because the old man would ask him in town, "Are there any afterlife?"

人形にんぎょう屋やは、ノッキリ（にょっきり）立たっている人形にんぎょうを見みせて、「ノッキリでござったか、ノッキリでござったか、と何なん度ども唱となえると良よい」と、適当てきとうな事ことを言いいました

それを聞きいた爺じいさまは、大だい喜よろこびで大金たいきんを支払しはらい、２つの人形にんぎょうを買かって家いえに帰かえりました

ある晩ばんの事こと、爺じいさまの家いえに泥棒どろぼうが入はいりました

One night, a thief entered the grandfather's house.

泥棒どろぼうは障子しょうじのところにノッキリと立たって、部屋へやの中なかの様子ようすをうかがっていました

The thief stood in a shady position at the shoji screen, watching what was going on inside the room.

すると、たまたま目めを覚さました爺じいさまが「ノッキリでござったか、ノッキリでござったか」と、後生ごしょうを唱となえ始はじめました

Then, an old man who happened to wake up, began chanting the afterlife, saying, "Are you in a glimpse or a glimpse?"

泥棒どろぼうは、「自分じぶんが隠かくれている事ことに気きが付つかれたかな？」と思おもって身みをかがめると、今度こんどは目めを覚さました婆ばばさまが「ハイツボコでござったか、ハイツボコでござったか」と後生ごしょうを唱となえ始はじめました
